Collage has the advantage that it is abstract and encourages revision.  So the students had a lot of chances to show the cycle in ways that were meaningful to them.  Also by working in pairs they had to verbalize their thinking when explaining their ideas to their partner.  Having an open-ended art assignment also facilitates differentiation because learners can include the full level of their understanding in the piece.
