June 2011 guide to the five visible planets

Happy Summer Break!  This could be the perfect time to take up a new hobby, like astronomy.  If you’re headed for the country—or anyplace with dark skies, for that matter—EarthSky.org offers this guide to the five visible planets for the month of June.

With some diligence, you might be able to catch all five visible planets in June 2011. By visible planet, we mean any planet that can be viewed without an optical aid and that was known to our ancestors since time immemorial. In their outward order from the sun, the visible planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
